What does it mean when some 25 year old check out girl says…”There you go Mam” as she hands you your change?
It means you have been Mam’ed!
SHE is at LEAST 25 I just turned 38…seriously..just. Should she really be:
“Yes Mam”
“Here you Go Mam”
“Thank you Mam”.
QUIT MAMING ME!
Sigh.
Perhaps it’s manners? Or maybe it’s Karma baby.
I apologize to every single 30 something women out there who I thought I was being polite too.
I deeply regret my horrible language.
I’m sorry I “Mam’ed” you.
(Oh and Thank you to the car load of inappropriate 19 year olds who cat called and whistled at me today. You were probably drunk, but you did take a little of the sting out of my previously mentioned old lady moment!)
Randi Troxell says
hehe! your so funny… truckload of boys huh! lol!
Tammi says
Haha!
I was getting “Ma’am”ed at 18, every time I went on the military base. I barely even notice anymore. It’s better than being called “miss”.
My kids say Yes Ma’am when I ask them to go do something. Haha! I think they picked it up from Treasure Planet.
Maternal Tales says
Ha ha – yes how annoying! You don’t really get Maam over here (thankfully)…but I have been Ma’amed over in the States and it makes me laugh…
By the way – I actually thought about you at 2.30 this morning!!! I looked at my clock and giggled because I knew I had a few hours left to sleep!! Seriously!
Jennifer says
I HATE being called Ma’am!!! I HATE IT!

Suzy says
The first time I was “mam’ned” I was depressed for a week.
Busy Bee Suz says
Too funny. Whenever I get Mam’ed, I always remember this line that I heard a comedian say years ago: Mam is just another word for B*tch.
I hate it. I DO.
Really, and I get this a lot more these days than I would like to. 🙂
Not that it was meant that way to YOU….just to me…and everyone else. ;0
Take care, Suz

I do believe that it is meant to be kind and not because of your age. I guess they should just say a very nice “Thank You” and leave it at that. A few years ago my 28 year old daughter and I worked together at a Hallmark store. I know that me, being in my 50’s, would just say thank you but I know that she would say, thank you mam or thank you sir. She never meant it to mean your old. I think I need to ask her if she is still doing that.
HEATHER says
LOL! Down here in the “south” kids are raised to address all adults as “sir” and “ma’am” . Doesn’t matter if you are 19 or 85, you are “ma’am” to anyone younger than you! Coming from New England myself, this was a shocker, but now it’s habit for me as well. I am also called ma’am by those much older than me. Just a southern thing i guess!
The Girl Next Door says
LOL! I hate hate hate getting “Mam’ed” so glad I am not alone!
kimert says
Don’t tell me you are 38 and just NOW being ma’amed? I have been being maamed for a very long time, or so it seems, and I just (like February) turned THIRTY!!!! LOL
I make my kids maam me, too. Is that bad?? ha ha
Loukia says
As if you were mam’ed! Silly young people, trying to be all polite! 38 is way too young to be saying mam’ed, you know! And yay for the cat call. Whatever, it’s nice to hear sometimes!
Marbella Designs says
yes, i hate being mam’ed! but there’s no way around it for me. i am so yound at heart, but my mind just doesn’t match my body. boo hoo
Martha says
Everytime you get Ma’med your credit rating goes up a few more points, really.
