When you go shopping do you spend much time thinking about how safe the food is that you are purchasing, and taking home to your family?
I can say that since I became a Mother I have become much more aware of the products I am putting into my cart and feeding to my family.
Organic? Canned vs Fresh? Grain fed? Soy? So many choices.
Then in August of 2008 something truly terrifying happened. There was an outbreak of Listeriosis resulting in illnesses and deaths. These illnesses were linked to Maple Leaf products. Did I have a fridge full of Maple Leaf products at the time. Yes! Didn’t everyone? Due to this tragic event, Maple Leaf has made a commitment to becoming a global leader in food safety.
Here is a short video outlining the steps Maple Leaf is taking to become a world leader in safety standards.
I have been given the opportunity to attend a Roundtable event for Maple Leaf Foods. The Roundtable has been organized by Matchstick, a Toronto based word of mouth marketing company, and the purpose of this event is to chat about Food Safety.
May 27th will be my opportunity to learn about Maple Leafs renewed commitment to safety and to ask questions directly of Maple Leaf executives and food safety experts.
This is also an opportunity for you!
Do you have any questions you would like me to ask of the Maple Leaf Executives or food safety experts?
Did the listeriosis outbreak change the way you shop?
I would love to hear from you. Your comments, your concerns so I can pass them on to the people who want to make our food safer, who want to put our minds at ease.
Give it some thought and send me any questions!
Oh and wish me luck, because I will be relying on the crazy lady hiding in my GPS to find the way.

Good luck with the round table discussion. I think it’s great that companies are taking steps and renewing their commitment to safer food.

Hi,
very resourceful information!
My family do care about diet, we drink milk, juice, water, barely soda, we exercise regularly, thus we stay fit.
Happy Monday!

Good luck!!!
I am definitely careful with what I purchase and put into my little girls body! Better safe than sorry right?! How cool that you get to participate in this event!

Well, you know me…I am freaked over everything. That’s why I don’t let my kids eat any sort of lettuce, meat not prepared by me, or garnishes on their plates IF we go out at all!
Everything must be pasteurized, heated correctly, or kept chilled, heck I wash my fruits and veggies with soap! My mom used to wash the turkey in bleach water!
I have not heard of Maple Leaf before, but, cannot wait to hear about your experience. You go Mama!

Again, I am so grateful our boys have food allergies and cannot et school lunches.
Thank you for small miracles…one thing I don’t have to worry about.

it can be pretty scary out there with food. I just try and keep up with the recalls. I hope you have an amazing weekend..

I didn’t hear about the Maple Leaf news but here in the U.S., we have so many recalls because of poor food handling. I would want to ask about how employees are treated and trained. If you have happy employees, their work ethics are strong and it shows in the quality of their work. If you have unhappy and disgruntled employees, they could care less what they do which is scary. Good luck at the meeting!

My kids have been eating a lot more vegetarian lunches since that happened. It did make me stop and think about lunch meat. Looking forward to your updates.

This is definitely something that requires some thought…and a significant issue for all of us. Thanks for this post…and I hope we’ll “talk” soon.
I’m glad the company is reaching out, and I’m thrilled that you’re involved!

Animal slaughter practices have become a sloppy nightmare to meet the ravenous demands of society – it’s a small miracles we’re not all poisoned to death on a daily basis, when you think about it.
Good luck at the round table, can’t wait to read your feedback 🙂

Sounds like an exciting opportunity. I would love to know what they think about the overuse of antibacterial and antimicrobial products, and their effects on creating “superbugs” that will be too resistant to antibiotics to be effectively treated in people’s bodies? What is their use of these products, and are they doing other things to try to increase safety while DECREASING the use of these products that are creating these superbugs?

I had hears/ watched/ read about a situation where they’re food safety practices were again being questioned. I would like to be more confident and yet I still wonder why this happened. Over worked under paid staff? not enough supplies for gloves? cleaners or whatever? it’s hard to know. We’ve been using a local butcher for our current moo, cluck and oink supplies.
