Turns out it’s not my fault that my head is spinning, I wake up in the middle of the night with the cold sweats, I bounce from idea to idea about what comprises the “perfect” 40th birthday in the most romantic city in the world!!!
I just bought too many books.
I have too many opinions. (and perhaps a small addiction to Chapters?)
Three Days in London, Five Days in Paris. Where would you stay? What would you do? New opinions that don’t come from Fodor’s, Frommer’s or Rick Steves’ welcome.

Vacation overload! I love both cities…don’t miss Orsay in Paris (I liked it better than the louvre) People watching at an outdoor cafe is also fun. You’re going to love it!

I am so excited for you, I know this has been a dream trip for a long time.
We visited London 5 years ago. It was a quick trip 2 full days (after 5 days in Venice) I was pretty wiped out by this time, so I don’t remember TOO much. We did stay at the: http://www.lanesborough.com/
IT was beyond extravagant. Came recommended by some very wealthy friends of ours. Each room had their own butler. Yeah, I thought it was crazy too. It was beautiful and the location was fantastic.
We ended up getting a personal tour guide (through the hotel) that took the two of us to all the best sights in 7 hours in his luxury car. It was great to do it this way since we were short on time.
Can’t help you on Paris…although I did stay at the Paris hotel in Vegas. 🙂

The best day in Paris was shopping at one of their open air markets. We loaded up with baguette, cheese, pate, olives and a bottle of wine and sat in a park and watched the world go by. Followed up by a trip to the Musee D’Orsay and I say this is the best day you can ever, ever have.
I studied St Paul’s Cathedral in design school so a trip there when in London made my trip. Take a trip south to see Stonehenge if you can. Very, very cool. I’m so jealous!

I would reccomend a day trip to Bath and Stonhenge while in London. Bath is adorable and Stonehenge is just cool looking. Personally I’d also switch the times to 5 days in London and 3 in Paris, but London is hands down one of my favorite places in the world so I’m biased…..
Last time I was in Paris there was the most delicious creperie just outside the eiffle tower, hands down best crepe I had in the city. (and cheaper than most too….)
Watch sunset from Monte Marte, its the one thing I make sure I do any time I’m there. The people watching is amazing and its a peaceful end to what was probably a hectic day of sightseeing.
If you can handle the bus trip to Versailles the gardens make it worth the trip. The town around it is meh but the gardens are just beautiful.
(OK now I want to go back….)

Haven’t been but I would definitely start with eliminating some of the guides. When planning our trips, I use one or two but rely heavily on tripadvisor.com for choosing where to stay. I frequently find restaurant recommendations etc. there too. 🙂
