Hubby and I got a last minute invite to go our for dinner. Out to a restaurant with other adults on a Saturday night? I am embarrassed to tell you how long it’s been since I got dressed up and went out for a fancy schmancy meal. I’m even more embarrassed to tell you that I had to psych myself up for it. MAKE myself get my big butt off the couch, out of my comfy yoga pants and into big girl clothes appropriate for a nice night on the town.
Cranked up the tunes, painted my nails, destroyed my closet in an effort to find an outfit that said something more “hot mama” less “she’s trying too hard and is ten years past her prime”. Finally with a thick coat of make-up, to cover up the black circles under my eyes, I was ready for a fabulous Saturday night.
This is what I really got.
A pleasant dinner with a couple of hardy belly laughs along the way. A pan seared sable fish that was cooked to perfection, a stunning glass of chardonnay that tasted like more, and a big old reality check.
We were seated near a table of seven “women” celebrating their 18th or 19th birthday? These um “women” were dressed to the nines for their evening out and were in all shapes and sizes. The odd thing, I’m pretty sure they were all wearing variations of the same little black dress. A stretch black spandex mini was worn by the size 0 all the way up to the size 22. All the girls had their bits and pieces, from their boobs to their butts, bursting out of every seam, spilling over the top and squishing out the bottom. Shiver. They were attracting all kinds of attention for all the wrong reasons. From the sausage casing dresses to the constant tapping of 4 inch pickle stabber shoes, to the gum clacking and not so quiet cursing, these girls were a shock to my system. because apparently I am old and out of touch I felt like I was witnessing a bit of the Jersey Shore right here in the Suburbs.
The Hubby’s at our table laughed and remarked that they were born at the wrong time. When they were in high school all the girls wore polo shirts and desert boots. They covered up! “Respected themselves and let their confidence shine from the inside!!” I piped up and then ranted, “Now the girls are more likely to emulate Snooki or Lindsay Lohan during her dark druggy days, then the styling’s of Ralph Lauren. What the hell is the world coming to when young girls feel like they have to dress like that to be beautiful?”
Although I am thrilled that these girls feel confident and think they look like all that and a bag of chips, I fear for the future …and my girls. Sigh.

I don’t know what time you grew up in but we had slutty girls when I was a teen too. There’s always a balance!

I am so afraid for my daughters…
How does a mother allow a daughter out of the door looking like this?

I am glad you got to go out and have a great dinner. Reading about those girls made me so sad. I really feel sorry for them.

And in ten years they’ll probably hope there’s no photo evidence of that evening! I can imagine it must be much harder thinking about these things when you have daughters.

I hear that….I fear for my son, and the kind of girls he will be attracted to and bring to my house. Shiver. I agree with your hubby. I grew up learning that it was more attractive (for the right reasons) to cover up what you were given. It’s sad what this world has come to. Hope you had a great time, despite the ahem…surroundings.

So true! Girls need to learn to keep their assets covered!

There is no way, by any stretch of the imagination, that girls look good when they dress like that.
Scary, scary

Did they have F*** me pumps with their dresses?

haha I love this post, I actually went out last weekend for my cousins bday and I seen many of those exact outfits…. I actually seen one guy go up to a girl barely covered up especially from waste down and started grabbing her butt.. withhhh the date shes with right there!!! caused a fight they got kicked out…but there you have it… you cant even gain respect when you have a bf right there.. many of girls my age or younger are all messed up and confused… no morals at all.

This might be one of my favorite posts I’ve read in a while. I know EXACTLY what you’re talking about and am always shocked when I see how short the shorts are “these days” it’s terrible! Yes, It makes me feel old but there’s no way in heck I would ever let my daughter dress like that.

I agree and now that I am raising a daughter I dread the teenage years! I have a feeling her father and I are going to have many battles ahead of us in the future!

Exactly. We wore those polos and high waisted jeans. Nothing, I mean nothing, was poking out. It’s ironic you posted about this topic…I just was looking at some old photos from Homecoming 1983 and my dress buttoned all the way up under my neck. Picture a turtle neck, if you will.
Times have changed. I’m not sure it’s for the best either.
One more little story to support that statement:
I was at a Minnesota Wild game and a girl sitting right in front of me was wearing a top that exposed her nipples – the actual nipple – pushed up out of the shirt (obviously breast, too). NOT KIDDING…NIPPLES! They were purposefully sticking out. She kept going up and down the aisle as I really think she wanted people to take a look. I was horrified. All the women and men around my section were horrified. For Pete’s sake, I was with my son.
I’ve NEVER in my life seen a woman expose her nipples. She was anything but beautiful.
God, we used to get embarrassed if our bra strap was accidently sticking out.
I have no idea what this world is coming to…

First, yum on the sable fish…my fav. I don’t think you will see your girls dressing like that. These girls obviously think their self worth is tied up in their appearance, good or bad. If we make sure our girls are involved in activities that raise their self esteem they don’t need to rely on looking like a Jersey shore girl.
