BlogHer, only the biggest social media event of the year. A gathering of more then 3000 bloggers from across Canada, The United States and beyond! Last year at this time I had spent hours planning an itinerary, figuring out what clothes to wear, getting my little one’s prepared for Mama’s unexpected five day absence as I partied my way across San Diego. What’s stressing me out? This Mama is in no way ready to leave the suburbs behind and jet off to New York City. Panic, keeping me awake at night, distracting me during the day kind of PANIC, is starting to set in. So much to do and so little time!
So what should I be doing? Preparing. Picking up some fab new clothes for this trip. Getting a pedicure. Getting on top of that schedule. Responding to party invites. Tweeting more. Commenting more. Maybe organizing meals for the family while I’m away. Oh and of course there are those posts to be written.
What I’m doing instead….uh, throwing a party for 20 Cheerleaders, swimming in the pool, surfing Facebook, baking cookies eating ridiculous amounts of cookies, painting fingernails with my girls. All great things if you are PROCRASTINATING! I’m great at that! (there’s that panicky feeling again) So I looked back at my post from BlogHer 11 and have decided to take my own advice.
I learned: It’s okay to turn down a party invite. To pace myself. To schedule down time. (an hour by the pool can help re-charge you for the night ahead!) To pack bandages (have you heard of NexCare liquid bandage spray…it’s genius), Advil and Visine. To be prepared for the unexpected. To be flexible and go with the flow! You never know when sharing a cab will introduce you to a new friend, or taking that phone call will lead you to a new opportunity!
To remember that BlogHer is really all about the people!
Time to stop worrying about every party invite, how many comments I’m behind, and even what I’m going to wear. Now don’t get me wrong, I may still sneak in a quick trip to my fave boutique downtown, but beyond that I’m going to charge my camera and laptop, make sure I have enough business cards, pack my lip gloss and most comfy flats, stock the fridge with food and hope for the best.
Time for a little less panicking and a little more living in the moment.
So forgive me for the lack of comment love on your blogs for the next week or so, I’m squeezing in some much needed quality time with my girls before sucking in all the me time I can in New York!
Wish me luck!
