It started at the cottage. It seems for me, many of my best memories did. The sounds of my Mother quietly humming in the kitchen, the waves quietly crashing on the shore, and chipmunks scattering across the expansive wood deck. I lay in my bed, not anxious to get up and start the day, but finally beckoned by the smell of bacon, coffee, toast and eggs cooking away in the kitchen. I would finally emerge from my bed and find my parents sharing a cup of coffee, waiting for my sister to get up so we could start our day.
I loved the ritual of watching them share that morning coffee, waking up to those smells. The consistency of spending every summer weekend the very same way. My Mom getting up first to get us started; a big weekend breakfast with all the fixings and my Dad filling up on one last coffee in his big “to go” cup before loading us all up in the boat to head out for a day on the lake. A day full of fishing, water skiing or just swimming in the cool dark lake. I don’t think my parents knew they were creating memories for us, they were just living the cottage life and enjoying every moment. I will never forget those endless summer days where my memories and smells are all tangled together. The smells of summer mornings.
Years later I now fully understand the power of a cup of coffee. It fuels me through early mornings, accompanies me on social outings, keeps me going on late nights and has the power to take me right back to those sweetest of mornings. We don’t have a cottage of our own, but SassyHubby and I do have our Sunday morning coffee rituals. From the time our girls were toddlers those Sunday mornings became gifts to each other; the “Sunday morning sleep in” followed by a piping hot cup of coffee. Each Sunday you were either the giver or recipient of a lazy morning in bed, followed by the wake-up call of hot coffee bedside, the fresh aroma waking you from your sweet slumber. So much more soothing then toddlers crying! Today we still carry on that tradition, sharing a hot cup of coffee and planning our day, dreaming about our week and for me….sometimes reflecting back on those lazy days at the cottage.
These past couple of weeks waking up the one I loved best with a fresh ground cup of coffee has never been easier and thanks to the Hamilton Beach Grind and Brew Single Serve Coffee Maker I’ve found a way to make some of my favourite coffee taste even better. The Hamilton Beach Grind and Brew has an option to use freshly ground beans, or grind your very own. You simply fill the bean chamber, add water, and press the Grind/Brew button. Then all you have to do is wait for that fresh aroma to fill the air. Even the puppy has learned that when the whirring starts, good things are about to happen. Coffee for Mama and a cookie for him. Why does the pup get a treat? Well who can resist a 6 month old pup cocking his head, puzzling at what that grinding noise is coming from the kitchen counter! The brewer easily fits a traditional mug, a travel mug, or even two 8-ounce cups at the very same time with a dual spout delivering two streams of coffee.
Two ways to brew – with whole beans or ground coffee
Grinds whole beans and brews for fresh flavor
Also brews with traditional ground coffee
Brew into one or two mugs or up to 16 oz. into a travel cup
Automatic rinse cleans grinding chamber to prevent clogging
Automatic shutoff
Adjustable cup rest fits travel cup or mug
Love fresh flavor? Add coffee beans to the grinding chamber
Want extra convenience? Add ground coffee to the permanent filter basket
Coffee scoop included
Sometimes if I’m feeling extra generous I will even froth up some milk to add to the top and create a little sassy twist to our morning coffee ritual. I know one day the sleep in won’t be so coveted. One day the house won’t be so chaotic and busy. Soon enough we will look back and wonder where the time went, I’m pretty sure it will be over a really good cup of coffee.
Thanks to the generous people at Hamilton Beach, I have some exciting news! One lucky reader of How To Survive Life In The Suburbs will win a Hamilton Beach Grind and Brew Single Serve Coffeemaker of their very own! ARV $109.99.

I don’t really have a coffee ritual — I like to drink it all the time. I like lots of flavored coffee creamer in it! I drink it with anyone who is around!

My morning ritual is the first one up gets the kettle on and then proceeds to make coffee in the french press. It takes a bit longer but it’s worth the wait and hey it’s the whole ritual (boiling, pouring, stirring, waiting, plunging) that makes it even better! I like to enjoy it on the patio with the morning sun.

My coffee ritual goes a little something like this~ brew fresh coffee, pour a hot cup, feed baby, forget about coffee, heat coffee up, change baby, forget about coffee, heat coffee up, play with baby, forget about coffee, heat coffee up and repeat for eternity 🙂
