She volunteered to take the pup out for a play…and clean up after him.
Reminded me to eat something. “Mama’s have to take care of themselves too!” She lectured, then made me some pasta?
She spent three hours cleaning her room. The closet and everything!
She did laundry without being asked and even put her dishes IN the dishwasher, not just beside it. Huh? Was this a true miracle in the suburbs?
Then that girl of mine asked me if she could go to the movies. Could that be what my sly teen had been “working on” all day? Not a chance. She didn’t ask for a ride or any money. Nope, way too easy.
Once she got home from the movies, she hit me with it. “Hey Mom, think I could have a couple, umm a few friends over for a swim or something on Wednesday?” Not an odd request in this house. Still too easy. My spidey senses were already on high alert, this innocent little question kicked this Mom’s Intuition into high gear. “A few friends?” I queried. “Yah, like 10 or 12 or 14 or so.” And there it was. The big ask. You know, just a little pool party with burgers, chips and pops for her nearest and dearest. Just a swimming pool crammed full of hormonal teens on the hottest of summer days. Like I hadn’t seen this one coming. You see, between the volunteering around the house, the cleaning and the oh so sweet behaviour had been the frantic text messages, the phone calls and the whispers and giggles floating down from her room. It was like watching myself in a strange crystal ball about 28 years ago? And now here she stood in front of me, a day well spent buttering me up and giving me her very best big blue doe eyes. How could I resist. Yes, there would be yet another pool party.
She may think she’s won a huge victory but the truth is, a clean room, a happy kid, and a backyard stuffed with laughing kids? I wouldn’t have it any other way.

I remember this sort of thing happening too, it comes as a real shock when they actually do chores without being told to do them and as mums we know there’s got to be something they want. LOL

This didn’t happen often but every now and again when one of the kids wanted to go to the cinema or something, their room would be immaculate (once in a blue moon!) – one hand washes the other right?

Haha, yes. I remember cleaning everything so we could go to the beach.

Funny how their brains work with all that pre-planning! Better to let her have the pool party & deal with any consequences afterwards should anything negative should arise at the party, than to just say no altogether. Kids need the chance to prove their responsibility to their parents.

Bahahaa, I used to do the same thing to my mom and aunt when I wanted something. Ill just go out of my way to do my duties around the house… then BAM! Can I go out to so and so’s …

LOL love hearing the teen stories….we were all young once and had similar strategies. Made me chuckle. She gets an A+ for careful planning & execution. Smart teen!

Sounds familiar! I love when the girls really need something and start furiously cleaning. I just sit back and wait… 🙂
