How much does College cost? How much does University cost? The mere thought of one years worth of tuition is enough to make a parent break out into a cold sweat. The reality is, if you want your children to receive a post secondary education, you have to prepare for it!
I’m the daughter of a banker. When I went off to University (more years ago that I care to admit), My Dad, he had all the ducks in a row for me. He’d taught me the value of a dollar, how to save, when to get my first credit card, how to be smart with money, but really, what he’d done was just take care of it. All of it including my tuition for as many years of schooling as I desired were all lined up and ready to go. I happily marched off to University without a worry in the world and all I had to do was focus on my eduction. Lucky right? Or perhaps just a man ahead of his time.
Now as the Mother of two teen girls it’s my turn to make sure all the ducks are in a row. How do I make sure I’m prepared for my two ducklings to leave the nest, fly off to any school they wish to without a care in the world, their only concern in the world their education and the path that lays ahead of them. I start the same way my Dad did. I’m making sure I’m educated. I know the realities of the expense of a quality education. I know my girls will have to continue to be educated on the value of a dollar and how to manage both money and life. And I know we will have to prepare and save before they finally choose to leave us and pursue their dreams at the University of their choice. We have savings in place. We’re on the right path, but there are always other options to consider and explore. One of these is the well known and trusted option of the Canadian Scholarship Trust.
About Canadian Scholarship Trusts:
- It is a straight forward way to start saving for your child’s education.
- Opening an RESP can help you save for your child’s education, and it’s not as daunting as you may think.
- It is a non-profit foundation founded in 1960.
- CST is an RESP that was one of the first education savings plans in the country, and it was a trail blazer in the RESP landscape.
- Its mission is simple: to advocate, develop, deliver and support solutions that will enable every Canadian resident to have sufficient financial resources to pursue post-secondary education.

My boys are both signed up with CST. My husband was when he was a baby by his parents so we did the same for our boys.

So true! It’s too late for me now my boys are grown ups. The youngest will finish University next year, carrying a large loan from OSAP. It will take him a while to pay it back. Thank you! 🙂

I have started saving for my son’s education with an RESP. I hope he doesn’t have to work to contribute to his education like I did because I would like for him to be able to solely focus on his education and studies.

I love learning about saving Stephanie and I don’t think we save enough for our kids education. I have a 9yr old and have no idea how I’m going to get him through college and/or university. I don’t want him to start his life with a massive loan to pay back so I’m doing what I can to save him money in the long run. Can’t wait to chat and learn more.

So important to do but something a challenge with the cost of everything these days. Sounds like it will be a good chat.
