Some days are good. Some days are great. Other days? You may need the assistance of coffee, the motivation of warm pastries or even children to drag your ass out of bed. It makes you think. Do you ever really know what’s going on behind closed doors? That smile you see on someone’s face? Is it real, is it fake? Is that Mama with the toddler screaming his head off, is she okay? Is she smiling because she’s slightly embarassed or smiling to hold back the flood of tears? The teenager down the road, maybe she’s not a sullen, moody bitch of a human being. Maybe that poor kid has stuff going on at home, maybe her parents are fighting, what if her Grandparents are sick, maybe that girl is just plain sad. The truth is, you never really know.
Yes, life can be sweet and joyous, and we hope each day is stuffed full of goodness. But the hard truth is, life can kind of suck too. Have you ever thought about trying to make a difference? Just a small one. What if once a day you tried one small act of kindness. Holding a door open for the person behind you, complementing a senior on her coat or warm winter hat, or just giving a knowing supportive nod to that Mama with the screaming Toddler. Today, why not share a smile with a stranger? Let someone else have the parking spot closest to the mall, pay for a strangers coffee at Tim Hortons, or drop a couple of items in the Good Will box. Why? Not just because it’s the right thing to do, but because you never know how one little act of kindness can shape the world of those around you.
Still think one small act of kindness can’t possibly make a difference?
This might change your mind.

That video is beautiful and really shows how a simple act of kindness can help in many ways. I donate to many charities so I can help as many as I can but my favorites are animal charities because I love animals.

I know when a small thing is done for me it makes me feel appreciated, so I try to do it for others.

I always try and give people who aren’t being so kind the benefit of the doubt because I really don’t know what’s going on behind closed doors. My dad died 24 years ago this year. He was always smiling. People that knew my dad always say to me “your dad always had a smile on his face”. That’s what I remember and that’s what I try to live up to. Sometime a smile is all you need to put yourself, or someone else, in a good mood. Keep smiling.

I really like this video and had seen it before but it is a very powerful message. This was a great article and it is so true we do not know people’s situation. Being kind costs us nothing and makes for a better world.

You know what I’m SO sick of. Mean girls. Why do teen girls have to be so damn mean. Praying karma teaches some of these unfeeling cruel children a lesson. Sorry, so harsh, but wow what a week.

Thank you for posting about showing small acts of kindness to people. If we all did this the world would be a much happier place.
