You’ve watched him on Cake Boss. You’ve marvelled at his cakes. You’ve laughed along at his family antics and watched that business grow. At home you’ve spotted his products on boutique shelves. You’ve been following Buddy Valestro for so long now, you really feel like you know him. (um, that’s not creepy is it?) So now that you’re headed to New York City so isn’t it only natural that you would hunt him down like a dog go find that famous bakery and fill your face with some delish pastries! Of course it is! But it’s kind of overwhelming. How does one get from Manhattan to that unknown place “Hoboken” New Jersey where the sweet magic happens. As it turns out, it’s not that hard! Here my friends is how anyone can have their own adventure, pick up a little cake and maybe if your really lucky… see a reality TV Show celebrity while your at it! You can win and have your cake too!
Here’s all you need to know for your very first visit to Carlos Bakery.
The nitty gritty. Your goal is to find:
Carlo’s Bake Shop
95 Washington St. Hoboken NJ
This is the real bakery, not the spin off located somewhere in the depths of NYC. How will you do it? You will leave Manhattan. Not by cab, that is too vanilla, (and expensive) you will take the Path train and then walk three short blocks until you arrive at Buddy’s door. It really is that simple!
Step one: Find the Path train. The Path train is similar to riding the New York City subway. Buy your ticket at the station and hop aboard, it’s then a quick ride on the Path to your stop. (approximately 10 minutes from the World Trade Centre site)
Step two: Once you leave the station in Hoboken, turn to the left and walk about a block up to Washington Street. Turn right on Washington Street and you will see Carlo’s Bakery ahead on the right. If you’re lucky you will see the signs before the lines!
Step three: Buy all the things! Snap some picture and enjoy. You’ve made it and now your only descison for the day is how much to spend on baked goods.
What can you expect at Carlo’s Bake Shop
Potentially, a line. We were very lucky. When we arrived mid-morning on a Monday, the line was just starting to peek out the door. Even more remarkable, Mama herself was leaving the bakery and she was in the mood to take some pictures!
Smiling and full of joy she gleefully told me she would love to pose for a photo with me. She thanked me for making the trip to Hoboken to check out the bakery, and reminded me to take some time to take in the sites of NYC while I was in town! What a sweet lady!
Once you are granted access to the bakery you are assaulted with the smells of all things sweet. The wall to wall display of baked goods are stuffed full with every kind of imaginable treat. At this point you may very well decide it’s a good thing there’s a line, you’re going to need a few minutes to gather your wits about you and figure out what kind of delicious treats you will take home.
When our turn to order arrived we selected much more than we could have ever consumed or safely returned home with. A couple of lobster tails, some cookies, cannoli, an eclair, a brownie and a cupcake. Oh. My. Yum.
We also added in some souvenirs for my girls back at home. T-shirts and coffee mugs, it was the least we could do!
Before we knew it, everything was wrapped up in a tidy bow and we were on our way.
Ambling back to the Path via Hoboken, with a little white box of pastries to enjoy.
Conclusion, this side trip?
Absolutely worth it.
