To the coward that rear ended my 17 year old daughter,
Did you sleep well last night? Did you dream over and over again about that car you smashed into and then just drove away? What kind of a man are you?
Friday night at about 5pm I got a phone call from one of my daughters very best friends. “Stephanie“….the words just started pouring out….”we were sitting at a stop light. We were completely stopped. The person in front of us was doing an illegal u-turn and we were talking about it and then BANG. We got hit from behind!”
Deep breath Mama. “Are you Okay. Is she Okay?” Don’t sound panicked, you sound panicked, slow down, I thought, You are the the Mom.
“Yes, we’re ok.”
“Where are you?, Hun”
“We pulled into the Five Guys parking lot. He followed. Got one look at us. Then sped away.”
I could hear the stress. Hear the tears in the edge of her voice. By this time my Husband could see the fear, panic, anxiety in my eyes. I was pointing, waving, he was already grabbing his car keys and putting on his shoes. “Stay there, we’re on our way.”
The girls were only 5 minutes from home. By the time SassyHubby and I arrived, someone had stopped to check on the two forlorn girls in the parking lot. They had witnessed that *person* speed away.
I needed to see my “baby”. She was fine, her girlfriend, fine. The car? Meh. It’s just a car. A little scratched. Not even that bad. SassyHubby called a friend who is also a Police Officer. This tiny collision ~ it was now deemed a hit and run.
So to my questions. WHO DOES THIS??? What kind of person rear ends a car in the middle of a busy intersection, hits two young girls and just TAKES OFF? Shame on you. Did he do this because we have a brand new Lincoln and he was afraid he couldn’t afford to fix it? Does he have a record? Is he just an ass who saw two young girls in the car and thought “screw you”, you’ll never catch me! Was he drinking? Texting? High? Or just a horrible excuse for a human being. You see, now that I knew the kids were okay, I was all kinds of Mama Bear angry.
We gave the girls hugs, wiped a couple of tears, and sent them back out into the world. When you fall off a horse you get right back on right? Life goes on, but this Mama was still puzzled, disappointed in man-kind and angry. Such a stupid thing.
This little event. I found it robbed my of my sleep. It had me tossing, turning. Why? Such a little thing, and the kids were fine. I realized I was angry that it could have been so much worse. Frightened at the thought that those girls could have been catapulted into that busy intersection, that they might of been badly hurt. I was disgusted with the man in the black SUV who’s paint marks are still on my bumper.
Then I decided instead of being angry, I needed to be thankful. Thankful that I didn’t raise human beings like that “man”. Thankful that I raised girls who take responsibilities for their actions. Thankful that I have a daughter who kept her cool, kept her foot firmly on the brake and used her defensive driving skills. Thankful that my girls weren’t hurt. Thankful that we know in the big picture there are more good people than bad, and thankful that karma will indeed get that asshat in the end, because really what other choice is there.

OMG! You have ever right to be upset and go all Mama Bear on that jerk! Just happy to hear that the girls are OK, shaken up but OK, and did everything right (calls, pulling over, etc). I hope karma deals with that jerk really soon.
Deborah Pucci says
So sorry this happened but thankful the the girls are okay. I don’t understand why someone would do that and then take off. What a jerk!!!
Dianne G. says
Wow, what a jerk to just take off with no regard to how the girls were. I hope there were cameras on the lights at the intersection and they catch the person that did this. Glad they are okay and that you could get there so quickly to comfort them.
Amie says
Im so glad they are ok ! I get being afraid , but nothing is worst then being a coward ! 🙁 Like you said , all that really matters is they are ok ! 😀

I’m glad they’re okay. It would be so scary for me too.
Terri Baker says
So glad the girls are OK. What a coward this person is.
Shirley says
I’m glad that your daughter and her friend are okay! That guy who hit them is a jerk. Unfortunately there are bad people out there, but eventually karma will catch up with him.
Judy Cowan says
Glad to hear that the girls are okay. I am sure they were scared. What a twit to hit & run, lets hope that karma does catch up with him.
Stephanie says
They were truly shaken up, but handled it well. Thank goodness. And yes, a twit is about the nicest thing I could say about him HAHA Here’s hoping for karma to catch up to him soon!
Anna Roszak-Robinson says
wow, glad the girls are okay. scary!!
Stephanie says
Me too!~ Some people. Grr
Gigi says
I know how scared you must have been to receive that call. So glad the girls are okay. It is my wish that this jackass is found and made to make amends.
Stephanie says
I adore your wish. Thanks for making it 🙂
I too am so thankful the girls were okay, because that is really all that matters.
Elizabeth Matthiesen says
What a despicable person that guy must be, I am so glad to hear that the girls are unhurt, just shaken up but as you said the result could have been very different. I don’t see much chance of the perpetrator getting caught unfortunately, he definitely needs to spend some time in jail to think about what he did and hopefully will then never do this sort of thing again.
Stephanie says
Sadly, you’re right. We did talk to a friend who is a police officer and this jerk will probably get away with it. I do wonder how he will sleep at night? Clearly, the girls were upset. How do you just drive away from that?
Thank goodness the girls were okay or I might have had to hunt him down like a dog! 🙂
Soozle says
Oh wow! 🙁 How horrible that someone could be so dishonest!! The poor gals!
That happened to my parents as well in a parking lot – a car backed into their PARKED vehicle and drove off.
Being a hit and run here in MB, you end up having to pay for the damages. It’s a silly system but someone needs to pay.
End of the day – as long as no one is hurt, a car can be fixed 🙁
Stephanie says
Sadly it was a very sad lesson for the girls to learn. At least the girls will know what to do should they ever find themselves in that situation again.
Sorry to hear this has also happened to your parents. People are so rude!
And there just doesn’t seem to be a perfect system to deal with accidents does there?
Stephanie LaPlante says
Oh I’d be mad too. Did anyone see the license plate? I hope he gets caught!
Stephanie says
I know! I was SO mad. Someone saw the car, and wacthed HIM drive away, but sadly didn’t get the entire plate. Grrr.
Stephanie LaPlante says
What about cameras? I’m so happy the girls are ok at least. Karma will hopefully find that a-hole.
Freda says
Glad hearing the girls are ok. That is the most important part. Believe that karma will get her payback on the jerk who hit and ran.
Stephanie says
Thanks Freda, I’m so happy the girls are okay. I will have to count on karma to catch that “person”!
Lynda Cook says
So sorry to hear this happen to your daughter, and glad that her and her friend are ok! some people are just jerks and don’t give a crap, they think if they leave nothing will happen, well guess what he will get caught and karma will bite him in the ass, hope he gets what he deserves!!
Stephanie says
Thanks Lynda, and I hope you’re right. I really can’t fathom what kind of a human does this.
