I adore every single thing about the summer. The smell of fresh cut grass, the bright blue skies, walks on the beach and excuses for extra scoops of ice cream. There’s nothing better than the hours spent basking in the sun and swimming in pools…heated to at least 85 degrees please. There is of course one wee problem, the risk of too much sun. You have to be careful with the sun. One way to protect yourself, to protect your skin and take good care of the people you love, is to be vigilant about the use of sunscreen.
What else can a family to do? Know that whether you are flying, driving, or taking a train this weekend, outside for just a short time, or for the entire day, remember that you will still be exposed to UV rays. Here are some tips on how to protect yourself and your little one’s.
*Protect your face and hands and reapply every two hours as you travel with NEUTROGENA® ULTRA SHEER® Face & Body Stick Sunscreen SPF 50+ and AVEENO® BABY® Sensitive Skin Face Sun Stick SPF 50 for your small ones. They’re carry-on friendly!
*If you are planning to post-up by the lake, beach or pool; Try NEUTROGENA® BEACH DEFENSE™ Lotion (or spray, for fuss-free; sand-free re-application), designed to help protect against the toughest conditions of summer with 80-minute water resistance.
Skin feeling burnt out from the weekend festivities? For UV protection plus moisturization, try AVEENO® PROTECT + HYDRATETM Sunscreen with ACTIVE NATURALS® Colloidal Oatmeal to help reverse dehydration caused by the sun in a single application.
*Remember to Lead by Example! Studies show that children are more likely to adopt healthy habits, like applying sunscreen, if they see their moms applying it on themselves. It’s important to rally moms to use sunscreen in front of their kids in order to demonstrate the importance of daily sunscreen use!
Other tips include:
- Apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before you head outdoors.
- Make sure you are using enough sunscreen. You will need to use approximately 1 ounce of sunscreen per application. That’s about the amount it would take to fill a shot glass. (and don’t forget the little places like the tops of your ears and feet)
- Wear sunglasses that offer UV protection.
- If your outside for extended periods of time, seek shade when possible. Think pool side umbrellas and palm trees on the beach. You can still enjoy your time outside while basking in the shade of a palm tree or umbrella.
- Consider limiting the number of hours you are outside when the sun is at it’s hottest. UV rays are usually strongest between the hours of 10am and 2pm.
- Stay hydrated.
