This weekend I took my girls to the mall in an attempt to do a one stop back to school shopping trip. Pft. Yah, that didn’t work out. Two teens and one Mama all agreeing on clothes that are appropriate for back to school and that won’t break the bank? Well, that my friends is a post for another day.
Today I need to rant about this:
When I went shopping what I did find was a cute little shirt for me. Kind of like this one!

A simple little while number with 3/4 sleeves and buttons up the front. My problem. I barely fit into the size large. Barely! Now here is the thing. I think I’m a pretty average Mama. A bit on the tall side, but average. I’m 5 ft 9” and weigh..well, none of your business what I weigh! (but the airlines aren’t asking me to step on a scale before I’m allowed on a plane. Average.)
So here is my question to you. If this average Canadian Mama is barely squeezing her bod with teeny boobs into a LARGE size shirt, what on earth are the women who are just a wee bit bigger than me, or with big boobs wearing? What the hell is going on? How did we as women come to accept this as normal!
Imagine if a clothing line was created where a medium size woman could fit into a medium size shirt. If the next size up was called Regular and the third size was deemed Normal? Sigh. Those clothing designers aren’t making it any easier to survive life in the suburbs.

My hubby wore size 8 footwear all his life, his feet never got bigger and just yesterday he picked up a pair and they are 9 12………..i don’t get it !

Some stores have ridiculous sizes, as if the person who labeled them was half asleep.

Oh, my. You have nailed it with this one! I have always had problems with fitted shirts across the boobs. I would say that I had medium sized ones all my life but now that I am older nothing closes there any more. Arms are also an issue. What a pain!

This also happened to me. It must all depend on the models the blouses are designed on.

I agree with you. The designers are so unrealistic and perpetuate women’s poor body image.
Josie Tusa says
I agree with you 100%!

I agree sizes are not all the same in all the stores and if you have big boobs, big as in D’s, like me then forget buying a button up shirt they never fit my boobs

What I hate the most about this sizing is what it says for our kids. My girls have no clue what size they are because it is all over the map. One fits a size 2 jeans at one store and then the next store is a size six. She has good self esteem so she’s okay with that but makes it hard to shop. My older girl – totally different body size and on the short size won’t even buy jeans. It’s impossible to find them to fit and don’t even get me started on back to school shopping – my shorter child with super strong athletic martial arts legs cannot fit into skinny jeans nor should she have to but that’s all you can find for tween or teen girls. HATE. I have a small handful of stores that work for my kids and for me – well I finally see what my mom always said – Paula there are no stores for women over 40. Kind of true. Harder to find clothing I want to wear and when I have money to buy that makes me very mad actually.

I am so with you. I was wearing a dress today that is a size large and yet I experienced the boob pullage issue even though the rest of the dress fit relatively well. I am of average size so I have no idea why this problem had to happen.

I think medium had become large etc…and specialty “large stores” and grown as a result. I do not really understand the purpose behind this – I am not large at all but that is what i seem to be wearing now. Kinda sad if “large” is interpreted to mean too large as it is implied. A conspiracy with the diet industry maybe, lol.

So agree! I am def top heavy and good luck finding a button shirt that does not make you look pregnant or completely ridiculous.

I’ve struggled with this as well. I have gone into some stores, especially lingerie stores, and found the clothing sizes ridiculously small even when it’s something like a large. It doesn’t seem to make good business sense.

I hear you, some shirts are ridiculous! It doesn’t do my psyche any good!

Shopping this week! I wonder what size i will be this shopping trip!

Tell me about it. I am trying to lose weight but I never seem to lose weight from my boobs so nothing “normal” ever fits!
