Cottage country. They call it God’s country for a reason. For me it’s the perfect escape. It’s quiet, the lakes are clear and the docks are long and invite conversation and family time. What else could you need? Well if you have little kids, or even teenagers – you may need a thing or two. Even in God’s country once in a while you hit a rainy day, some super hot weather or dare I say it? Boredom. Here are 5 things to do when in Minden/Canarvon/Haliburton with kids.
Kawartha Dairy.
Serving up what can only be described as the best ice-cream EVER. (and I know my ice-cream). This is a must stop when in cottage country. The flavours are unique, ranging from Cotton Candy, to Bear Tracks, the quality unsurpassed and the sizes are more than generous. A “baby” scoop is enough for most, but why not treat yourself and get a single or double in a waffle cone. Insider Tip: Pack some wet wipes. Your gonna need them.
Location: 12750 Hwy 35. Minden
Find the famous Shoe Tree. No really, it’s a thing.
The urban legend tells us this tree holds hundreds, perhaps thousands of pairs of shoes, hung, nailed and placed with care through it’s massive branches. It’s a site to behold and the location, until now, has been a mystery! This particular tree is located about a 9 minute drive outside of Minden on South Lake Road. The closest street address is 2354 South Lake Road, Minden. Happy Hunting! Insider Tip: Don’t forget your camera. a hammer and an old pair or shoes or flip flips to tack to the tree.
Stroll the “main drag” . Sometimes you just need to get out of the cabin! Take a moment to go explore Minden and all the sweet shops it has to offer on it’s main street. From the popular Thai Restaurant to the not to be missed coffee shop and of course Stedmans. It’s like a s step back in time as you wander through aisles browsing for toys, candy, sunscreen, and some much needed merch or funny hats.
Take a trip to Santa’s Village.
Santa has a summer house and it’s only about an hour away from Minden. Dive head first into this family fun by exploring the sprawling 60 acres of this unique park all about the big guy. While you are there be sure to test your skill on the Jolly Bumpers, chill out on Santa’s Summer Sleigh Riverboat Cruise, ride the Red Baron, meet Santa’s Reindeer and of course say Hi to Santa himself.
Some of the highlights at Santa’s Village include a Kid’s Aerial Park great for the little one’s and Santa’s Spray and Play Zone that over looks the water!
Most things in Santa’s Village are included however it’s good to know the adjacent Sportsland – which is great for the older set – is pay as you go.
Insider Tips: : We LOVED that every little guest gets their very own elf hat! Such a cute way to get into the spirit of things!
Looking to extend your adventure? Santa’s Whispering Pines Campground ,camping and trailer park, are located right beside the Muskoka River and in close proximity to Santa’s Village. Tenting and trailer sites are available with a General Store on-site for all of your needs.
Location:1624 Golden Beach Road, Bracebridge, Ontario
Buttermilk Falls.
An easy hike adjacent to the falls. Your reward at the end of the trail is the expansive view of Boshkung Lake. When the water is low you can even get in and wade!
Location: About 8km north of Carnarvon on Hwy 35. You will see signs for Buttermilk Falls. Insider Tip: Enjoy the free parking and pack bug spray!
Now my only question is, when can we go back?
