Over the last 10 weeks this family has been doing a lot of experimenting in the kitchen. We’ve tried to master the art of bread making, baked more cakes, cupcakes, and cinnamon buns than I can count, attempted to create our very own version of the “Big Mac” and made more than a few batches of sweet potato fries. Sweet potato fries with a side of garlic mayo. Oh my yum. Some food experiments have been huge successes, others, not so much.
The new love in our lives making all our foodie dreams just a little bit more fun to chase, the Combi Wave 3 in 1 microwave by Breville. This is no ordinary microwave. This microwave has the ability to let you air fry, bake, roast and yes, or course you can still do all the wonderful normal microwave things. After all, a girl needs to know she can still make her popcorn.
All the deets:
The Combi Wave 3 in 1 is an innovative multitasker that integrates three popular countertop appliances — the microwave, the convection oven, and the air fryer — into one powerful, I don’t know how we lived without it, machine.
After a quick read through the owners manual you quickly learn that each of three types of heating elements can work alone or in concert with one another. The days of defrosting food in one appliance, roasting it in a second and air frying it in a third are over as Breville’s designers have – using the company’s patented Element IQ heating system – figured out how to seamlessly sequence different types of heat as they are needed.
The Fast Combi function is designed to cook your favorite dishes faster. Combining Convection Oven, Grilling and Microwave to achieve the desired temperature and perfect results faster than traditional ovens. The Cook from Frozen function is designed to achieve perfectly cooked results from frozen. The function uses the convection oven, grill and microwave at different cooking stages. It really is the smartest of home appliances.
Of course I had to put this little beauty to the test and it passed with flying colours. I started with a simple cookie. Yes, a cookie. We had frozen cookie dough in the freezer. I popped it in the microwave, hit a couple of buttons, and in a few minutes had a hot, freshly baked cookie. A baked cookie! Astounded, I decided to truly test the microwave and see if it would “grill” a sandwich. Can you have a crush on an appliance? Because this microwave can do it all. I present to you the perfect way to “grill” an Apple, Cheddar and Brie Grilled Cheese. Yes, this was created IN A MICROWAVE! The cheese was melty and gooey and the bread had just the perfect amount of crisp. I could not have done a better job in a cast-iron pan on the stove top if I tried.
Here’s everything you need to create your own masterpiece at home:
Ingredients:
- French style bread
- Butter
- Brie Cheese
- Apple
Directions:
- Coat both sides of bread generously with butter.
- Layer the bread with a thin (or thick!) slice of brie and 3-5 slices of apple.
- Cover and let cook until the bread starts to brown and the cheese starts to melt, 7 to 9 minutes. Enjoy.
What I loved:
- The Combi Wave has an 80% quieter soft close door – brilliant when the teens are making mug cakes at 11 pm at night.
- This microwave is 50% quieter while in operation.
- The child lock and mute buttons mean you can customize this microwave in a way I’ve never seen before.
- It has more even heat distribution than my conventional oven!
- The Combi Wave has dedicated buttons for popcorn and to melt chocolate and soften butter.
- The Power Smoothing Inverter technology means we can reheat our favourites like pizza slices, soup and lasagna with precision and ease or delicately defrost meats and meals without overheating and drying out edges.

I love to make fudge in the microwave. So easy and no need for a candy thermometer. Yum.

I’ve tried “mug cakes”. Basically making a cake in a mug with the microwave.

Fudge! I’m not too microwave savvy, other than warming things up! But I found a microwave fudge recipe I love!! 💕
Jeanna says
I’m not a very good cook and usually use the microwave to warm up foods! I have used it to try to make pigs in a blanket, but they didn’t turn out so well!

I’m not super creative with my standard microwave besides reheating and popcorn. But with this one I would be inspired to try many new things!

When microwaves first came out, my father decided to spend $1700 on the top of the line unit. It was huge and he actually built a stand for it so it wouldn’t take up Mom’s precious counter space. That meant it of stood alone, like a shrine in the kitchen. My dad loved it – so much actually that even 30 years later, we still have it.
Although now when the power button is pressed it seems to dim the house lights – and make a sound that only Godzilla would understand.
I do remember the booklet it came with – black and white with staples that really didn’t hold the pages together. For $1700, it didn’t help much. As witnessed by us that day, when my brother read that you could cook eggs in the microwave. “Wow, this is gonna help Mom so much now cause we can make our own breakfasts!”
You know where this story is going don’t you…Mom had to spend an hour cleaning the inside of the new microwave after the eggs exploded. And my brother never trusted that big machine for years, and Mom never let us touch it for years. “Its not a toy you guys! Get away from there”!
Oh so what was the question again? Whats the most interesting thing you’ve made in a microwave? Mine is boring – a quadruple grilled cheese sandwich. 🙂

Not very creative, but I’ve done scalloped potatoes in the microwave.

Honestly I have not used a microwave very creatively. Maybe I have always had poor models.
Kris Wilson says
The most “creative” meal I’ve made in the microwave is poached eggs using a little bit of water and vinegar in a bowl.
