How to Survive Life in the Suburbs

Top 10 Not So Scary Movies

in Everyday on 10/20/20

With each passing year the “holiday” of Halloween morphs into something a wee bit different for me.  Way back in the day it was all about the well thought out costumes and parties.  My University roomies looking as cute as possible and hitting up the right bars and parties.  Can I just say a big hallelujah there was no Twitter, Facebook, Tik Tok or Instagram back in the day!  Once I got married it was about throwing the ultimate house party, costumes always required for entrance – we were hanging on to that Halloween fantasy as long as we could.  When our babies arrived, Halloween took a dramatically different turn.  Suddenly it was about walks through the pumpkin patch, roasting pumpkin seeds, helping the little divas find the cutest costumes and the true cuteness overload and the joy in their eyes as they figured out Trick or Treating meant anything was possible and candy was unlimited and FREE.

Now those babies of mine are all grown and out of the house (cry) my SassyHubby and I have been working on some new Halloween traditions.  Answering the door for and handing out candy to the little goblins and ghouls in our neighbourhood then turning out the lights and watching a sorta kinda scary movie…..with all the popcorn of course.  The beauty of this plan?  We get to ohh and awe over all the neighbours babies – then wave goodbye and dive into a good old fashioned movie marathon.  Here are our choices for the best not so scary Halloween movies.  The best part, you can find all these movies and so much more on Rogers On Demand!

10.  Jaws -Ok, this may be the oldest scary movie on my list but if you ever felt something on your leg while swimming in the ocean – then you know Jaws deserves a spot on this list.

9. Ghostbusters – The original 1984 flick, not the new one.  Sorry, I’m a traditionalist.

8. Zombieland – One of SassyHubby’s favourites.  Big cars, free reign over the land and a thirst to kill the dead people walking the earth.  It’s a comedy horror that makes for an easy watch.

7. It:Chapter One – Worth it for the jump scares alone – plus parts of it were filmed in Ontario!

6. Gremlins – Only a little bit scary.  Just don’t feed those things after midnight!

5.  Silence Of The Lambs – Oh, you know it’s just plain scary.

4. I Know What You Did Last Summer – It’s a classic – summertime, teens, stalkers and bad decisions.

3. Final Destination – A little horror with a side of predictable.  If I can handle the scares so can you.

2. Happy Death Day – What’s worse than getting murdered on your birthday? Reliving the same day over and over.  I’d say it’s a comedy horror.  Apparently I like this genre.

1. Scream – For me, this movie will always reign supreme as the scary movie that strikes the perfect balance of funny and fear.  A must watch on Halloween week.  Don’t forget the Jiffy Pop.

BONUS FLICK  – I haven’t watched this one yet and it threatens to be more stupid than scary but deserves an honourable mention. Adam Sandler’s Hubie Halloween (honestly the reviews aren’t good – have you seen it yet?)

How will you be celebrating Halloween this year, will it be different than normal?

No matter how you celebrate this week of the candy bar I hope your little people are happy, safe and healthy.

Happy Halloween!
